A pedestrian struck by a car going at 30mph rather than 40mph is reportedly 3.5 times more likely to survive. Further, traffic accidents are now the fifth largest killer worldwide, with an estimated 1.3 million people dying on the roads each year.
The City will also pilot a 20-mph speed limit in the Claremont section of the Bronx. Other residential neighborhoods can apply for a similar speed zone change.
You can bet that strict speed enforcement and more speeding tickets will also accompany the new skeleton speed signs and 20-mph speed zone areas.
