Suffolk County Red Light Camera Program

The Suffolk County Red Light Safety Program involves the installation of red light cameras  in Suffolk County at up to 50 intersections. This page lists the locations of some of the red light cameras in Suffolk County.

A red light camera takes photographs of motorists who disobey red lights and then sends them a ticket in the mail and assesses a $50 fine (plus $4 processing fee for credit card payments). Points are NOT assessed for these infractions and they are NOT reported to auto insurance companies.

The registered owner is responsible for paying the ticket and, if remains unpaid, a default conviction and a $25 late fee will be imposed. Eventually, the owner’s registration can be placed on hold for non-payment.

  • I am not opposed to red light cameras, but i am opposed to red light cameras near residential homes. I happen to live on the corner of the higest grossing red light camera. Not only do i have one on the side of my home, there is also one on the opposite corner at the front if my home. The beeping and the screatching are unbearable but nothing compare tho the disco we have going on at night once its dark. They are a big problem and they sometimes keep me up at night. They should NOT be in residential areas and would love to know how to end it.

  • Hello. I had just received a ticket for my vehicle violating a red light in a right turning lane. The video shows my vehicle approaching the turn when the light was green, then yellow, and then the arrow disappeared and a regular red light appeared. The ticket says the yellow light was 3.5 seconds (speed limit 40mph) and the red light violation was 0.2 into the start of the red light. Is this ticket worth fighting? I find it ridiculous they issued my vehicle a ticket as if the vehicle did not continue to turn, stopping short could have caused an accident. Thanks!

      Anonymous,

It is not worth fighting because it is near-impossible to beat and is not a moving violation.

  • Got caught twice (one week apart) in January for right turn on Red. I got lost on these signs and different rules on different intersections. I’ve been driving in the states in the South and in the Midwest and it’s OK to turn right on Red when cautions are exercised. Now, I’m scared of driving on the road in Long Island. If safety is of the utmost concerns of Suffolk County Authority, strictly implementing Red Light Camera Program might not be a good idea because driving on the road is all about real response/reaction in real situation and not simply the traffic rules on the paper (got rear-ended is a good example as many have mentioned in their comments). A warning notice should be sent out for the first time and Suffolk County Authority shouldn’t be just so eager to collect money from drivers/taxpayers. I felt got robbed of $100 within one week …..

  • I grew up in suffolk, and left 16 years ago because of this kind of brainless use of taxpayer funds. I sure am glad I moved my business out of there and started over….Suffolk county does not deserve a dime. Just got one of these violations at corner of Mark Tree road and eastbound 347. There is a no turn on red sign there…so , I looked around and no cars were heading into the direction I was turning into, so I did something thats very rare today and I (used my brain, which actually still works) and decided it was safe to turn even though a stupid sign with NO BRAINS was telling me not to use my brains. But thats pretty much suffolk county in a nutshell – do NOT use your BRAIN – WE ARE YOUR BRAIN. Incredibly, I survived, no one died, no one was hurt and life actually continued. Now lets say it went the other way, and I stayed put, and got rear – ended while pondering to use my brain or not…and I was seriously hurt. Where do you think Suffolk county would be for that one? I bet vacationing in the Carrabean…..cal this person, call that person – no one can figure out who to talk to to resolve your problem…what a joke.

  • o.k. This is bordering on stupid. There are so many cameras–none with signs that I’ve seen–that I almost had an accident looking for them. This is driver danger. I’m going to start writing letters.

  • Sit at any intersection with a red light camera at any time of day and count how many times the lights flash, in what we suppose, is someone running a red light. Now times that by all cameras in Suffolk County and times that by how many times the light cycles in a day. Of course, the wee hours probably don’t see as many drivers, but you get the point. Now try to figure out how much money Suffolk County makes on a daily basis, based on the flashing lights times $50 a pop. How can our county be in financial trouble, with this unlimited source of income? Does it make my taxes go down? NO! Do these cameras make safer drivers? I don’t know, but after my ticket, I’m more likely to sit out the light and piss off the people behind me. And in doing so, I have had many near misses on being rear-ended. I paid it once, and only after my second notice, and left out the “late fee.”

    Reply
  • The percentage of the late fee is absolutely absurd. The Feds passed a law last year limiting the percent late charge credit card companies can charge. This was enacted to “protect” the consumer and ensure that the “fees are fair”. I guess the government is can charge 50% late charge after a few days.. they must be exempt from “protecting” the consumer and being fair. I moved and my mail forwarding delayed the ticket enough to be charged the late fee. I just paid it and and the late fee.

    Reply
    • B Silverman,

I have to agree. A 10% late fee is more reasonable.

    • Actually its against credit card rules and regulations in any merchant policy with any entity that accepts credit cards to be charging additional costs just because the customer uses a credit card. National grid electric and many gas stations in Suffolk county are in violation. Regretably it seems there are not enough agencies to enforce all these laws anymore, and the only solution they seem to believe will fix it all is to just pay higher costs. I wonder if they looked at the countrys credit rating lately? Regretably it looks like to me we are ripening up for another 911……keep pissing off people who are suppose to be watching this countries back and you are asking for it.

  • I have received a Red Light Safety Program “CITATION ENCLOSED – DO NOT DISCARD,” envelope in my mail box at home. I have 4 relatives who work at various USPS positions and I am humiliated that some program is allowed to tell everyone in my town that I have a citation for one of my four registered vehicles BEFORE I EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT! My first question of course was what happened? I open it and find it is questionable about a complete red light stop at a very camera-to-street-moving-farther-away-angled intersection (454 @ Broadway E/B). I know we all complete stop for a second, look and then we go. We are all professional drivers and we are sometimes heavy footed – but we understand the danger and stop and look when making a right on red. I also know that camera timing is electrical and can be manipulated and fault to currant errors and I am reading this fine and looking at the video and becoming more ticked as I read. I am then faced with trying to find out which driver in my home is being blamed for this? We all drive home from the railroad using this intersection. Well, now I am really furious because the citation I am discovering, as I read it, has been circulating for eight (8) months without my knowledge???? Shouldn’t these people in Denver make notification immediate? What is this? I will pay it, but I want to know how I can fight the late notification and the fact that my privacy rights have been walked on with this CITATION ENCLOSED – DO NOT DISCARD red large lettering on the outside front of the envelope right above my name. Who gave these people in Denver the right to do this? and more importantly, with all the Long Islanders out of work – why are people in Denver Colorado overseeing our roads and drivers? Also, why is a company in Denver Colorado permitted to use the words Suffolk County in their name? I will check with everyone I know that works at USPS, but I wanted to know from you, too, for the most part, I am embarrassed that the red print is allowed on the outside of the envelope for all to see, even before I am aware of any kind of traffic law questions being made against me. Furthermore, obviously this Red Light Program is not working because in between the date of the citation and the date I received the citation, I was rear-ended in Nassau County while stopped at a red light and my daughter was hit broadside be a teenage driver in another incident. Proof positive – this program is just making some Suffolk County politician’s relative over there in Denver very wealthy. I am too old to be fooled and we are all very safe drivers with no moving violations against us, four of us drive for a living – Class A with additional endorsements. THIS WHOLE THING STINKS. We need someone to start keeping records and questioning all. P.S. I still don’t know which one of us is being charged for not stopping on red using the lead foot (and yes, some of us should be charged with excessive waste of gasoline and diesel, but not a “going through a red light fine”) but it is a stop, the wheels stop however with the lead foot and a far away angled camera image at night it could appear the car does not stop for a second. This whole thing just stinks.

Well, I think I just got ticketed. Iwas behind a huge truck that went through the light without slowing down. I didn’t even know the light was changing because I couldn’t see in front of the truck. I am so angry. When I realized I was going through, I tried to stop, but at that point it was more dangerous for me to stay where I was. Can I fight this? Is there video that shows what happened? I feel sick. I haven’t gotten a ticket in 12 years.

I just got a citation as well. This is going to be pretty embarrassing for them, I hope.

They have a picture of a car running a red light with a blurry picture of a license plate they say is mine and want to charge me a $50.00 fine.

Three things to show their systems are broken:

    1. I was working in Manhattan at that time of the citation and have the emails to prove it.

    2. The car in the photo is not mine. I don’t even own a car. In fact I sold my car in 2008, over 3 and a half years ago. I haven’t even owned a vehicle since March 2008. Given that I don’t own a car, I wonder if they will accept that defense?

    3. The EBN number they claim is mine is from license plates that were destroyed in 2008. Yes, I have the receipt of destruction from the NY DMV. Yes, I included that in my response back. Do you think evidence that the plates they claim are mine do not physically exist in this world would be ample proof that there was a mistake?

So my question is, if they can run my old plates and find my name, why do their records fail to show that the plates were destroyed? Should I be concerned as a tax payer that the system has a flaw in it? Should I report this?

Do you think they will call me to court to defend this, it is kind of embarrassing to their system. I am a lawyer, too, I think I have a good shot at this.

    • Greg,

It is possible that they run your old plates and find your name. I don’t know why the records are wrong but you should report it to DMV.

That’s a good idea. I’ll report it, however, I am not looking forward to going to Long Island from Manhattan to prove that I don’t have a car. Please note, I don’t have a car to even get there.

I guess reimbursement is out of the question. A good way for them to make money is to just send the same blurry picture to thousands of random citizens upstate, the cost to drive to LI would be more than the fees, so most people would just pay it. I should suggest this to them and maybe get a consultancy fee, and maybe they will reimburse me then. Then maybe you guys can can spend that extra revenue to build an even more monolithic courthouse than the one in Islip.

  • When you come to a red light camera and the light is red, you have to come to a full stop to make a right hand turn?

There were no signs saying there is a traffic camera present or that there was no turn on red. There wasn’t even a light in lane three where I made the turn on red. Seems very deceptive to me.

Do I have a chance at fighting this?

  • I just received a summons and photograph at Great Neck Road and Rt 110. First there is no sign that the intersection is a Red Light Safety Intersection with cameras. Second the intersection allows right turns on red when the No Turn On Red sign is illuminated. The pictures of my car making a right turn on red does not include a picture of the illuminated sign. It shows a red light but does not show whether the sign was illuminated or not. I will plead not guilty and show up in court with pictures of the intersection evidencing why the camera photo’s are not indicative of a violation or not.

      • I believe I did. The intersection is quite confusing since for many years it was a No Turn on Red corner. Now with the sign which says No Turn When Illuminated it seems counter intuitive. The photographs show my tail lights illuminated and I assume I stopped to ponder the decision. If the camera was positioned to show the No Turn When Illuminated sign there would be conclusive proof one way or the other.

It must have changed while I was underneath it. I didnt feel like slamming my brakes on cuz I was going 60 in a 55. Needless to say it will be my 1st ticket and im pleased to know that I wont be getting points or it wont go to my insurance. Am I at fault YES I am do I like it no I dont. Mr. Levy, you are the captain of the ship! I place blame on you for this outrage against the already strapped citizens of Suffolk County and also some blame on the people for not organizing and rising up against this oppression and abuse. People need to get a petition or protest going and let our officials know we don’t want to live in a big brother state. The County is stealing from our families! Some can afford it, many can not! • I have begun to see the cameras around Suffolk and have some questions, perhaps you can help answer.
    1. How does 50 camera rule work? At rte. 112 and LIE there are four cameras I believe. Does each count as one of the 50 or does the entire intersection area count as one camera?
    2. Does there need to be a warning sign in place ahead of the intersection warning of a redlight camera. If the purpose is not to make money but save lives, then a warning of an approaching red light is warranted otherwise this in my opinion its just a money making scheme, because people will continue to run red lights if not warned and that does not save lives.
    3. Colorado really, we had to outsource to another state, we could not find a firm on Long Island to keep jobs here?
4.is it legal or constitutional to outsource law enforcement to a non-law enforcement agency?

    Thanks for any insight.

Camera on 347 and Mark Tree Lane.
I saw a flashing camera when I stopped on Mark Tree Lane intersection of 347.
It was raining, a 55 MPH zone and the intersection crosses 347 at a diagonal with no cross-walk only a white line. I could not safely proceed thru the intersection but when I stopped (abruptly) the vehicle stopped over the line. What do you do in a situation like this? You will get a ticket if you proceed thru or try to stop.
Another flash was seen on 347 and Nichols Rd. intersection. In heavy traffic I entered the intersection with a green light, the turned red before my vehicle cleared the intersection. Can I expect another “Love Letter”. It has been that kind of week!

Maybe a countdown clock similar to the pedestrian walk/don’t walk devices. I know that as I’m approaching an intersection at 45 mph, knowing that the light will change in 2 seconds, I’d be able to stop in time. Its all about raising revenue.

      • No I actually got a late fee too because they (the company) sent it to the wrong address. DMV provided the Colorad0-based company with an address I haven’t lived at for almost two years even though DMV had my current address on record. I was told that I have to go to court to fight this late fee even though the Colorado-based company acknowledges the information they had was wrong. They claim only a NY judge can remove the late fee. In addition, I got TWO violations from the exact same intersection within days of one another. In both cases I was in the intersection at the exact same second when the light turned red. Had I slammed on brakes, I could have 1 – potentially caused an accident or 2 – I would have skidded into the intersection and gotten a ticket anyway. Needless to say I am going to court to fight this.

The late fee sounds totally improper. I would check the photographs regarding the two violations, however. The red light camera is supposed to activate only if you actually have run a red light.

I think that I was taken by red light video camera at the intersection Jericho turnpike and Larkfield Rd. in East Northport yesterday 1AM March 02, 2011. I stopped at the red light and I was waiting for green light for making left. When light was about to turn into yellow I started to move a little because that green light changed into yellow again in 5 seconds. And I saw flash light two times not even one time. After I was taken by video camera, police man told me that those video cameras have to adjusted.

I was mailed the ticket (Yes I was guilty) but they sent me the ticket the first week in January, claiming they sent me a previous one in November.
Now I get banged another $25.00 late fee plus a $4 convenience fee for paying on the web. There is no way to speak to anyone, just a voice mail asking for a call back number. They don’t return calls. And whole operation is out of Colorado? This stinks to high heaven like typical NY corruption. Anyone else feeling this?

    • Ray,

You are one of many to complain about the late fee and lack of notice. I hope this is an aberration and not a pattern.

The $4 “convenience” fee is just silly.

    • I feel your pain…while away this winter I returned home to find a citation that said I didnt stop at the line for Right on Red. Paid the fine even though I had to pull up into the intersection because of six foot of snow and stopped there..Not bad enough but also got the $25 late fee…I wasn’t even home to get my mail…The answer in Denver was you have to go to court to get the fee taken care of …Went to court today and felt like a criminal. Waited for 30 minutes and still got no one to help. All they were going to do was to give me more paperwork and tell me to come back to waste the courts time to have the $25 removed (I have proof from airline tickets that I was not home…THIS IS A DISGRACE…Anyone out there know how to start a class action suit going aganst Suffolk County Many other citizens in other states have done so…This is a SCAM of the biggest proportion…I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE SPENT THE MONEY ON OUR “CRUMMY ROADS’ AND IMPROVED SERVICES INSTEAD ON BUYING CAMERAS TO TRAP LAW ABIDING CITIZENS…SHAMEFULL POLITICANS ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!

    • Judy,

The penalties for ignoring a Suffolk County red light ticket are as follows:

      * Failure to pay the fine or to contest liability prior to the due date of the Notice of Liability is an admission of liability, and failure to appear at a hearing after having requested a hearing is an admission of liability and constitutes a waiver of the right to appeal.

      * Failure to pay the fine by the due date will result in the imposition of an additional late-payment fee of $25. If the fine is not paid after the second notice date, collections proceedings will commence and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles will be notified to place a hold on your registration activity.

Impoundment is not one of those penalties but, as you can read, there are other serious consequences.

      • So if there are more serious consequences then isn’t this against our right to face our accuser? They get away with that by saying that it’s only a fine, but now if you don’t pay it do they take your property? Do they take away your license? To me I want to face the civil servant that witnessed maybe the stale light, the oil slick on the road, the tractor trailer tailgating me and not just a video of a car in my name in between a yellow and re light deciding not to get rear ended or lose control and go through the light to avoid an accident.

  • I made a legal right on red and got a ticket for running the light. I paid the $65 to avoid taking time off work to fight it. The video shows me stop with my directional on, then proceed with the right turn.

    • Miss,

If the video shows your vehicle coming to a complete stop (not a rolling stop), then you had a good defense to the red light camera ticket. However, if all 4 wheels of your car did not come to a rest, then you are technically guilty as charged.

      I hope this help.

      • I received the same ticket myself. I looked at the video, and yes, I guess I didn’t come to a complete stop, but the less than 1 mph crawl I did, mainly because I couldn’t see past the big arse SUV to my left, seems to be a bit overboard. Officer friends that I’ve shown this video to agree they would not have pulled anyone over based on what they saw; yet as I said, the video doesn’t show me come to a standstill. I guess I’m screwed just based on that fact alone. The law is the law I guess!!

  • thanks for the info, yea I wasn’t sure if it had everything but so far it seems like the best map for LI that I could find

That’s interesting that the owner is liable. What if your car was stolen? I guess there are always ‘what if’ situations like that, but for most people the bottom line is that they hold the owner responsible.

    • Mike,

Actually, if the car is stolen, then you have a full-proof defense. The owner just needs a police report to show that the vehicle had been stolen prior to the violation.

Is it true you can plead not guilty and claim you were not the driver at the time the photo was taken?

    • Mike,

No, it is not true. The owner is 100% liable even if he or she was not driving the vehicle which disobeyed the red light.

BTW, thanks for the link. Be aware that this map is incomplete, however. For instance, it does contain the red light camera posted on Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard in Greenvale.

    • Carol, I am sorry for your misfortune. These tickets are very hard to beat but fortunately carry 0 points and no insurance consequences. Generally, we recommend just paying the $50.

  • Thanks Matthew. The picture is pretty clear that the car shown is a different year and style than my car. But very peculiar that it is the same make. Do you know if they run a query on any other factors than license plate? Would appear that they try to match up the make also. Too coincidental that if one digit was off, the car would happen to be so similar.

  • I received an erroneous violation yesterday. The scary thing is that although the picture is a bit blurry, the license plate number looks like mine. But the car is not mine and I’ve never been in that intersection as far as I know. I don’t even live on Long Island.

Trying to clear it up via phone, but am afraid that someone may have counterfeited my plate and put it on a stolen car of similar make & model.

  • They put up cameras at 347 and Nicolls Rd, at least WB, I believe EB as well.

I just got caught going into the intersection 0.7 seconds after the light changed, according to their own record.

The funny part is, while the photos are damaging, the VIDEO they supplied does not show the traffic light while I am going through the intersection.

    0.7 seconds. nice.

    • Bob,

That’s super close for ticket. These camera don’t give ANY grace time. It seems like 1 second grace would be reasonable. In regard to your video, if it truly doesn’t show you disobeying the light, then plead not guilty.

Let me know how you make out.
