Nassau County recently created various new fees involving New York speeding tickets and other traffic tickets. The Nassau County Traffic & Parking Violations Agency (TPVA), which already charges the highest traffic fines in the State, added these new fees effective June 23, 2008. Specifically, a $2 per ticket “convenience” charge will be imposed upon any motorist who pays his or her fine by phone or via the TPVA web site. The county also came up for a creative (if not insulting) fee for dismissed tickets. Called an “administrative fee”, the TPVA will charge a $15 fee when granting the dismissal of the following tickets: un-inspected, equipment violation, unlicensed, un-insured motorist, un-registered and handicapped parking permit tickets. Finally, and most ridiculous, is the “time to pay” fee”. Motorists who need time to pay an imposed fine will be charged $15 per ticket. Even when you need time to pay a $20 parking ticket, an additional $15 will be imposed. Only time will tell whether the “time to pay” fee withstands judicial scrutiny.
