Crack Down At NYC Traffic Violations Bureau

As a fall-out from the NYC ticket-fixing scandal, a special unit called the “Court Monitoring Unit” is being created within the Internal Affairs Bureau. The unit will monitor traffic court testimony and traffic ticket records to discourage and catch police officer’s “throwing” cases. We expect 1 to 3 police officers from this new unit to be regularly roaming the halls and courtrooms at all 7 New York City Traffic Violations Bureaus and looking for officers intentionally losing cases as favors for friends, family and colleagues.

Roughly 40 police officers are likely to be indicted and another 100 disciplined for “dumping” traffic tickets for friends and family in the ever-widening NYC ticket-fixing scandal.

The increased attention from this new unit will most certainly encourage police officers to be extra careful and prepared for their cases. Not good news for motorists who contest their NYC traffic tickets.

  • I received a speeding ticket from the NYPD. The officer put the wrong Date of Birth on it. Is that enough to beat it in the Queens TVB.

    • Mr. D,

The wrong date of birth does not render your traffic ticket fatally defective. In my opinion, it is a minor error that is of little consequence (absent other issues or problems with the People’s case).

The nyc traffic violations bureau should be an independent agency , not associated with the same agency that hires the hearing officer on the basis of how much they bring in.

Charles, I couldn’t agree more. In fact, the name Traffic Violations Bureau is misleading as the TVB is actually an arm of the DMV (no different from other arms like licensing and road tests).

      Thanks for posting your comment.

  • In the first place, TVB is a hopeless place to defend a traffic ticket. The State should do away with the TVB and go back to the regular court presided by a real judge!

      Robert,

There are many who would agree with you including myself. The TVB is actually an arm of the DMV. So essentially what you have is a DMV judge being paid by DMV to decide whether DMV gets your money. Kind of like the fox guarding the chicken coop.
