Accidents with deer can lead to very serious injuries or death. Below are some tips to avoid colliding with a deer.
- Be especially carefully during the months of October, November and December. Deer are most active during these months because it is their breeding season.
- Use extreme caution when driving at dawn and dusk; this is when driver visibility is poor and the deer are most active.
- Deer travel in groups. So if you see one, slow down as there are likely others nearby. Further, deer do “bolt” and quickly change directions. So slow down if you are passing a deer moving or standing near the side of the road.
- If you see deer cross the road, slow down and use extreme caution. Deer travel in groups, expect other deer to follow.
- Use caution and be alert when driving on roadways marked with deer crossing signs. These signs are placed in areas that have had a large number of deer/vehicle collisions.
