Earlier this month, I wrote about Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s desire for the Suffolk Traffic Violations Bureau (“TVB”) to succeed from New York State. With Suffolk County in dire financial shape, Bellone’s initiative would enable the county – rather than the state – to keep the millions of dollars generated by traffic ticket fines issued in Babylon, Huntington, Islip, Smithtown and Brookhaven.
On Monday, the New York State Senate passed a bill Monday that would allow Suffolk County to establish its own TVB. If the Assembly approves a similar measure, then it will be interesting to see how an independent Suffolk County TVB is organized and administered. Currently, it is very hard for motorists and NY traffic lawyers to win so hopefully the new TVB will offer more balanced justice.
