The NYC Traffic Violations Bureau And Most Other NY Traffic Courts Are Closed Due To The Corona Virus

Starting Wednesday, March 18, 2020, all eight NYC Traffic Violation Bureau locations will be closed for one month.  There are eight Traffic Violations Bureaus (TVBs) operated by the DMV in the five boroughs of New York City to adjudicate traffic tickets issued in New York City.  Two in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn, two in Queens, one in the Bronx and one in Staten Island.  Those who are scheduled to appear on or after March 18, 2020 will receive an adjournment notice from the DMV.  Most other New York State traffic courts have already closed including the Suffolk County Traffic Violations & Parking Agency and the Nassau County Traffic Violations & Parking Agency.
The TVB  and DMV are allowing people to make reservations to perform TVB/DMV tasks which cannot be done online at the State-run offices in the five boroughs of New York City and in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Albany and Onondaga Counties.   The reservation policy will be phased in regionally beginning Wednesday, March 18, 2020 through Friday, March 20, 2020.  There will be no “walk-ins” allowed in the 27 State-run district offices.

As it relates to New York City traffic tickets, reservations can be made for pleading not guilty to a case with a “required appearance” and getting a new court date for cases on which you missed your court date.  Examples of DMV matters for which reservations can be made include applying for a REAL ID or EDL, registering a vehicle for the first time or applying for a learner permit.  All other customers should conduct their DMV business online. There are more than 60 transactions available online, including renewing a license or registration, ordering a custom plate, obtaining a driver record (abstract), changing an address, making a payment and much more.

Customers can make a reservation online on the DMV’s website or by calling the reservation hotline at 1-518-626-8990.

Weiss & Associates, PC is available if you need help fighting any New York traffic ticket, or making a reservation or attending that reservation.  Call us at 212-683-7373 if you need help.  Our office remains open (with our staff working from remotely).

  • i received a special coronavirus plea offer for a speeding ticket in Milan, NY from February. It would reduce my initial ticket from 4 points to 2 points. Should i take it? Or if i fight it is there a chance to get it reduced to 0?

      Mariane,

Sounds like a decent offer. It would not be unreasonable to accept it (especially if your license is otherwise clean).

  • Hi there,
Thanks in advance if you see this message and answer my question.

I got a speeding ticket last December for going over 15 mph. I pleaded not guilty, because I wasn’t driving nearly that fast and I do not want 4 points into my license. I was scheduled to go on a hearing next week (first week of June) but it looks like the TVB offices in NYC are still closed. Since the city will reopen soon, will my hearing by rescheduled?

If it does, will I be able to still postpone the new date? I care more about not getting any points into my license and I read points will stay in your license for 18 months from the day you receive the ticket. I’m trying to push the hearing for as long as I can.

    Thanks,
    JB

      JB,

Yes, you date will likely be re-scheduled. Because you have apparently never re-scheduled it, you will get a change to change the date yourself.

Check the TVB website, your case may have already been re-scheduled.

  • Hi,
I have a ticket that must be handled in person. The original date was supposed to take place April 17th and I have been checking weekly for an update as to when my new date would be and I still can’t access that information. The phone lines weren’t available so I checked online which is not fulfilling my requests to check the new date. As things are starting to reopen slowly I would like to know exactly when I need to appear in court. Thank you.

    Hi there…

    Question:
Can my case be dismissed for delay?

    – I was pulled over for “improper passing”
    (a 3 Point violation)
on my Vespa Scooter in June/18
    – Not Guilty Plea
    – 2 court hearings got “Rescheduled By Office”
    – Next hearing is now scheduled for 4/28/21

    VIOLATION
    IMPROPER PASSING-MCY
    DATE-LOC 07/01/18 SECT. LAW 1252B
    TRIAL-DTE 04/28/21 TIME 10:30 AM

    07/09/18 07/03/19 SCHEDULE – NOT GUILTY PLEA
    06/11/19 06/03/20 RESCHEDULE BY OFFICE

      Andre Kristahn,

In NY, there is not right to a speedy trial in regard to traffic tickets. Therefore, this incredibly long delay is not a basis for dismissal.

  • Hi. I went to pay online for 2 school zone camera violations that occurred in March. I knew exactly where and when they happened but I never received a ticket in the mail. I thought I’d just pay it before I incurred any additional admin fees. When I searched under my license plate, 4 other violations appeared that I wasn’t aware of. I did not received any ticket for any of them. When I tried to look at the tickets online, it said “no image available”. All 6 violations did not have any images available. I did pay for the 2 that I knew of. Am I still liable for the other 4? I don’t even know where they happened. Thanks for your help. G.

      Geena,

You are liable unless you can prove otherwise. So plead not guilty (if you want) to those 4. Good luck!

If you are found guilty of a New York traffic ticket, points will NOT transfer onto your PA license.

      Louise A Caracci,

You son’s ticket has a “required appearance” because it is considered an excess speed. It carries 11 points and a possible suspension. We, therefore, do not recommend that he plead guilty.

I doubt that you’ll be this camera ticket. You’d have to show it was a true medical emergency, a tough burden.

  • Hi Matthew,

I have a tinted window ticket – and I want to plead not guilty. There is no option to do that online and the TVB offices are closed+ the DMV hotline / emails are not available.
It says my license will be suspended may 1st if I do not respond by that time.
Is there a way to plead not guilty now? Or am I forced to pay the fine?

    Thank you!
