The New York Legislature approved a .50 cent surcharge to be added to each New York City yellow cab trip. The surcharge is to help subsidize subway, bus and commuter train serviced provided by the Metropolitan Transit Authority. This hike becomes effective January 1, 2010.
Just yet another example of how the Legislature taxes New Yorkers by using vehicle and traffic laws. This move can only serve to reduce cab ridership and consequently hurt some of the hardest working and neediest members of New York City’s working population.
