Newsday recently an article which disclosed that only a small fraction of those who drink and drive are actually caught. While the exact figures are not known, the Institute for Traffic Safety Management writes that the average person convicted of driving while intoxicated has done so 100-200 times before being caught. Further, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that only 1 out of 50 drunk drivers are actually arrested. Finally, the Nassau County District Attorney office estimates that 1 out of 10 drivers on the road are driving while impaired by alcohol. These are “sobering” stats and really should encourage you to be extra vigilant and drive defensively.
